Wisdom of the Leaf Coca Summit

The McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy, in collaboration with Wade Davis, hosted the Wisdom of the Leaf Coca Summit during February 3 โ€“ 7, 2025 at the breathtaking Willka T’ika retreat center, nestled in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Join us in making a difference! Download and Read our Open letter to support the upcoming review of the scheduling of the coca leaf.

The letter is being adressed to the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence, regarding their upcoming review of the coca leafโ€”read and add your signature to support change. The letter should be sent to the following email: ecddsecretariat@who.int

We lovingly dedicate this summit to the memory and legacy of Timothy Plowman, whose contributions to coca continue to inspire

In 1973, Harvardโ€™s Botanical Museum, under the direction of Richard Evans Schultes, secured support from the US Department of Agriculture for a comprehensive study of the botany, ethnobotany, and nutritional value of coca. Leading the research were James Duke (USDA) and Timothy Plowman, arguably the finest botanical explorer of his generation. Also on the trail of the sacred plant was another Schultes protรฉgรฉ, Andrew Weil, a graduate of Harvard Medical School with a profound knowledge of medicinal botany.

Tim Plowman, who died before his time in 1989, devoted his professional life to the study of cocaโ€”the plant had no greater championโ€”only to have his research, the results of years of field work in the most difficult and remote reaches of a continent, denied and betrayed by the very government that had sponsored his work. His elegant descriptions of coca as a mild and benign stimulant central to traditional culture and religion, and his discovery that the leaves play an essential role in the diet and well-being of indigenous peoples did nothing to stop those committed to eradicating the plant with policies that have only brought violence, corruption and
pain to the world.

Tim celebrated coca, just as he honored the many Andean and Amazonia cultures that revere the plant to this day. It was his fervent hope that coca would one day be liberated, its benefits made available to all people, the leaf itself heralded, as in the time of the Inca, as a gift of the gods. This conference, Wisdom of the Leaf, is dedicated to Timโ€™s legacy, and to all those from every nation who share his vision for the plant.
