Dr. Paul Alan Cox is a renowned ethnobotanist, recognized for his work discovering potential drug leads and his significant conservation efforts. He holds degrees from Brigham Young University, the University of Wales (M.Sc., Fulbright Fellow), and Harvard University (Ph.D., where he held fellowships). He was a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley and named a Presidential Young Investigator. Dr. Cox served as Professor and Dean at BYU before being appointed the King Carl XVI Gustaf Professor in Sweden.
Named one of TIME magazineโs โHeroes of Medicineโ for ethnobotanical drug discovery, he is also a recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize for conserving Samoan rainforests and shared the Rachel Carson Award. He served as President of the Society of Economic Botany and the International Society for Ethnopharmacology, and as Director of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens.
Cox founded and chairs Seacology, an organization that has preserved significant rain forest and coral reef on islands worldwide. He also chaired the Advisory Committee for the National Park of American Samoa, which he helped establish. Based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he directs the Institute for Ethnomedicine, where his current research focuses on discovering therapies for neurodegenerative illnesses like ALS and Alzheimerโs Disease. He has published over 200 scientific papers and 4 books.
